Reaction Torque Sensors

Special sensors are used to measure torque vectors. Quartz disks cut for the shear effect are arranged in a circle so that the shear-sensitive axis of each disk is at a tangent to the circle. The fitting of the quartz disks and the mechanical shape of the sensor are similar to those of the single component load washer. Here too, the sensor must be fitted under high mechanical preload, so that the shear forces can be transmitted by stiction. A torque acting on the sensor produces tangential shear stresses in the quartz disks. As all the quartz disks are connected electrically in parallel, the total output signal is proportional to the torque applied.

The torque sensor is preloaded between two special nuts. It comes factory-calibrated and can be used for measuring immediately.

This type of sensor is particularly useful in testing rotary switches for quality assurance purposes.

Another type of sensor design, the stationary torque dynamometer, is particularly suitable for testing pneumatic screwdrivers.

Torque measurement plays an important part in determining the cutting force of rotating tools and Kistler offers rotating measuring systems for this application.

A special application is the rotating torque wheel for measuring braking moment.
